How Do I Make “The Wiz” costumes for Halloween?

After seeing “The Wiz” the 70’s version of the old classic The Wizard of Oz, my kids were in love… after all it does have one of their (and the world’s) favorite icon, Michael Jackson, in it and with the catchy tunes, bright colors, awesome costumes and superb dancing my children couldn’t help but fall in love. Now they have begged me to allow them to be characters from “The Wiz”. Not the Broadway classic costumes but the actual movie characters and I have looked everywhere. The costumes that some local and online shops do have involve cheap material, little selection and look very similar to the original Wizard of Oz, which is not of any interest for my very opinionated, vibrant children. Does anyone have any suggestions of how to make these costumes without spending an arm and a leg… especially since this will be a one-time event?

Tedd Ross’ – Cowardly Lion
Michael Jackson’s – Scarecrow
Nipsey Russell’s – Tinman
Diana Ross’s – Dorothy

and Mom as

Thelma Carpenter’s – Miss One

Thanks for ALL suggestion’s in advance!
